My fix: Following http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/How_to_control_fan_speed, I created /etc/modprobe.d/thinkpad_acpi.conf with: options thinkpad_acpi fan_control=1 and installed the package thinkfan. After rebooting, CPU temperatures are around 50 degrees C. This seems a potentially dangerous situation, and the Ubuntu install/update program should be careful to preserve temperature control.
