Title:
File system becomes read only during upgrade

Status in linux-firmware package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I was alerted this morning by monitoring that a file system had become
read-only. Upon inspection of the server I could see it had just
finished updated (attempted to) automatically. I attempted to resolve
the issue and the host went down.

I then started my hot spare which is exactly the same hardware (Intel
NUC) and same OS version 20.04 and as it been off for months applied
  the updates.

During the upgrade of linux-firmware the system locked up and then
eventually threw the error you can see in the terminal transcript
  attached.

The system is then in a state where it is unable to boot.
