absent any advice here on triage steps, i figured it couldn't hurt to attempt updating kernels.
not knowing enough about possible interactions between a much newer kernel and whatever my problem was, I debated upgrading kernels via `.deb`s directly from the ppa, versus HWE-edge stack. I decided to hope the hwe-edge stack is at least tested together; so I attempted `apt install --install-recommends linux-generic-hwe-20.04-edge`, which installs 5.8.0.33 at time of writing. This was performed from chroot, and `update-grub && updateinitramfs -v -k all` So - this booted fine to the desktop - Once. Upon login, ubuntu software prompted me to update, which i did; upon reboot I'm back in the same state; "hung" at the grub passphrase screen; doesn't log in, nor does it show any error on incorrect keyphrase. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1909056 Title: keyboard not working at FDE Passphrase screen Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: fresh install of 20.04.1. Setting up FDE per https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Full_Disk_Encryption_Howto_2019. This is my 4th system following those directions (2 devboxes, one other laptop), I'm reasonably confident the steps are sound & I followed them correctly. after completion and reboot, - system boots to the simple text prompt to enter disk encryption phasephrase; - but typing pass+<enter> does nothing (both valid & invalid passwd) - (I assume no keypresses are getting through, either, based on other bugs; but I do note that the capslock key does toggle it's indicator light) Googling previous bugs this seems to be a recurring problem.
