was this fixed? just upgraded from 12.04 to 12.10 and lost my desktop... :(

There's currently no way to specify this dependency. --- This bug is caused by the allowing of eg. linux-lowlatency kernel's headers, while the actual bug people are hitting is bug #1068488 ie. the Ubuntu 12.10 installer doesn't install linux-headers-generic by default.
