It went into stop-and-go mode, and made funny noises. This is worse in higher resolutions. I had a notion that it might be a problem with USB, which in turn resides in the kernel. I was right. The most current kernel, which has been installed, was version 4.15.0-50. The previous one (which still is available via GRUB) was version 4.15.0-48. I tried that version, and the problem went away. I'm using Kubuntu 18.04.
