External USB devices are fine. At first it happened sporadically at boot or kicking in during operation, now it's a somewhat permanent state. In grub I can still use the keyboard, on the login screen not anymore. dmesg snippet of the relevant lines: [ 0.000000] Linux version 4.15.0-22-generic (buildd@lgw01-amd64-013) (gcc version 7.3.0 (Ubuntu 7.3.0-16ubuntu3)) #24-Ubuntu SMP Wed May 16 12:15:17 UTC 2018 (Ubuntu 4.15.0-22.24-generic 4.15.17) [ ... ] [ 1.644120] usb 1-5: new full-speed USB device number 3 using xhci_hcd [ 1.772223] usb 1-5: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [ 2.008240] usb 1-5: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [ 2.244154] usb 1-5: new full-speed USB device number 4 using xhci_hcd [ 2.372240] usb 1-5: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [ 2.608239] usb 1-5: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [ 2.716180] usb usb1-port5: attempt power cycle [ 3.368155] usb 1-5: new full-speed USB device number 5 using xhci_hcd [ 3.368385] usb 1-5: Device not responding to setup address. This happens with the current Ubuntu generic kernel (4.15.0-22) as well as vanilla upstream kernel 4.17. In fact, it happened already with Ubuntu 16.04 and whatever the recent kernel there was.
