Same issue with Gateway LT20 Netbook (Intel 945GM chipset and 1024x600 display) running Xubuntu 16.04 Problem began with latest update to Linux 4.13.0-45-generic kernel. Using recovery mode barely usable but stretches 800x600 across the display. Booting with 4.10.0-42-generic eliminates the problem.
