I found that dmesg returns this:

---------------------------[ cut ]----------------------------
...
[ 0.769467] [Firmware Bug]: ACPI MWAIT C-state 0x0 not supported by HW (0x0)
[ 0.769532] [Firmware Bug]: ACPI MWAIT C-state 0x0 not supported by HW (0x0)
[ 0.769586] [Firmware Bug]: ACPI MWAIT C-state 0x0 not supported by HW (0x0)
[ 0.769681] [Firmware Bug]: ACPI MWAIT C-state 0x0 not supported by HW (0x0)
...
---------------------------[ cut ]----------------------------

So maybe https://askubuntu.com/questions/971477/ubuntu-17-10-keeps-
locking-up-and-freezing-mouse-and-keyboard-input-doesnt-wor might be a
solution. I will try that.

I remember that Ubuntu 16.04 and Mint 18 (?) did not show this effect on
the same machine. Also, Ubuntu 17.10 runs very stable on another machine
here (laptop).

Title:
  System freezes randomly

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
System freezes randomly on a daily basis. First the mouse pointer
actions are getting slow for a few seconds and after that the screen
freezes. Various SysCtl key combinations I found on the net do not
work. Switching to a console does not work. Remote login via SSH is
not possible. The only way to get the system working again is a hard
  reboot.

I did not find valueable information in the log files indicating what
  wents wrong here.
