The problem also appears with kernel 3.8.0-33-generic on my laptop (see my other comments above). I am now 100% positive this is linked to the wifi (ipw2200 card). I loose all network connectivity, thunderbird gets crazy (high cpu usage) and I see one or two kworker processes. Turning wifi off does not solve the problem (even waiting several minutes), but when turning it back, it solves the problem right away (the kworkers disapear and thunderbird starts behaving again).
