Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v4.13 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

Title:
  Backlight Won't Adjust, Xorg Failures

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Previously had Ubuntu 16.04 installed on this machine, but I installed
Xubuntu over it including formatting my partitions. I did not have
issues with adjusting the brightness, getting the screen to show, or
Xorg crashes prior to the second install (ie the Ubuntu worked fine).

This bug falls under "Backlight control does not work and there are no
entries in /sys/class/backlight" category. I also experience the Blank
Screen at Startup issue, which is only remedied by adding nomodeset to
  the grub boot options.
