This is probably the reason it does not display the login screen on my monitor - it tries to send it to the non-existing one. I see a pink background with nothing written on it. Update: a black screen with maverick since at least the end of Dec. 2010. Using System - Preferences - Monitors I turned off the second monitor, the one that the system mistakenly found, so once I log in, my desktop works fine. The monitor type is recognized correctly. It is just that the system dreams up an extra monitor of the same type. In earlier releases the system thought I had my monitor plus a laptop monitor and then I had to turn off the laptop monitor in the Preferences.
