Addition to comment#2 This is on bare metal. An x201 that DOES NOT have an actual CD-ROM drive.

Poking around, I find there's no device node for the cdrom in /dev, and indeed no modules for it. For my VM it seems I need at minimum drivers/scsi/sr_mod.ko and drivers/cdrom/cdrom.ko.
