Booting the mainline v4.8-rc6 kernel, the disk enumeration is still incorrect.
The SATA SSD OS disk is still /dev/sdi and the 8 SATA disk LSI Megaraid hba is still /dev/sd[abcdefgh] As an aside the mainline v4.8-rc6 kernel boots into emergency mode as it cannot mount the zfs filesystems. The zfs modules do not exist in this kernel or headers. Can this be escalated to the author of the mpt3sas module? ** Tags added: kernel-bug-exists-upstream ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Confirmed ** Description changed: My system had this disk configuration running 14.04 without issue: 1 SATA SSD ext4 on internal 6Gb SATA port was /dev/sda with 14.04 OS installed. 3 SATA disks (zfs raidz) on internal 3Gb SATA ports was /dev/sd[bcd] 8 SATA disks ext4 on LSI Megaraid 9240-8i in IT mode was /dev/sd[efghijkl] Upgrade to 16.04.1 LTS now looks like this: 1 SATA SSD ext4 on internal 6Gb SATA port is now /dev/sdi with 16.04.1 installed. 3 SATA disks (zfs raidz) on internal 3Gb SATA ports is now /dev/sd[jkl] 8 SATA disks ext4 on LSI Megaraid 9240-8i in IT mode are /dev/sd[abcdefgh] The sytem boots, but any utils e.g. smartd, hdparm etc. referencing /dev/sda are now fubared. Booting a 12.04 LiveCD enumerates the disks correctly. - Booting a 16.04 Lice CD enumarates the disks incorrectly as described above. + Booting a 16.04 LiveCD enumerates the disks incorrectly as described above. I'm pointing the blame for this at mpt3sas.ko (kernel module loaded for the LSI hba) which was previously mpt2sas.ko This bug is completely repeatable on every boot.
