Sorry, actually it was iwlwifi-3160-15.ucode and then
iwlwifi-3160-14.ucode that I tried which both worked better than the
default (since it's the highest revision) which is
iwlwifi-3160-16.ucode.

@Seth - I tested that package, confirmed that version 17 got loaded, and
initially it seemed to work better. I was able to detect and connect to
my 5Ghz network right away, and iwconfig shows the connection's bitrate
at 72 Mbps, which is what I'd expect with this card as it's 1x1:1.

However, when I launch Kodi and it starts picking up my network shares,
it's very slow to load the art assets (box covers, movie posters, etc.)
and if I try to play a video it hangs trying to launch.

Lower b/w-demanding tasks work ok - I can ssh into other machines on the
network, and apt update/upgrade seems to work ok.

It's like once the you start a sustained, moderately high data stream it
either starts dropping packets or the bitrate drops.

Also: in order to even detect 5Ghz networks, I had to add "option
11n_disable=8" to /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf.

I just can't wrap my head around why it would have worked excellent
through 15.04, then 15.10, but suddenly isn't working on 5Ghz at all...
it seems like quite a regression!

Anything else I can try or other data points I can provide?

Title:
  5Ghz link no longer works on 16.04 - iwlwifi

Status in linux-firmware package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Gone from 15.04 to 15.10 on a media PC, constantly streaming movies on
  the 5Ghz since some get choppy on 2.4Ghz. Has worked beautifully for
  well over a year now on both 15.x releases.

  Decided to take the plunge to 16.04, and things were good at first,
  but I believe there was a firmware update that broke 5Ghz support.

  After a update (then a reboot), I could (grudgingly) connect to my
  5Ghz network, but throughput would drop like a rock even on an apt
  update/upgrade, to the point where it would stop responding entirely.

  Had a thought regarding firmware, and decided to force an older rev,
  so I copied the newest from /lib/firmware/ (iwlwifi-3160-16.ucode) to
  a backup location and removed it from /lib/firmware/ which forced use
  of the next newest firmware, iwlwifi-3160-16.ucode, to be loaded.

  After a reboot, the difference is night and day - no problem
  connecting to my 5Ghz network again, and throughput is as expected for
  a solid 5Ghz connection.

  This is the AC version of this card (first one listed here):
  https://wikidevi.com/wiki/Intel#abgn.2Bac

  ```
  ~:$ lspci -nn | grep -i intel
  02:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Intel Corporation Wireless 3160
[8086:08b3] (rev 83)
  ```

  This is an up to date 16.04, running kernel 4.4.0-28-generic, linux-
  firmware version 1.158 (although this occurred on 1.157 as well).

  I'm happy to output more info if needed.
