The last kernel brought me back to my corrupted display. I had to re-install for other reasons and I started back with the first kernel I tried that didn't give me any grief: 4.3-rc1
However, for some reason my display started to freeze up. My mouse pointer would move, I could manage it over SSH, and my apps would be functioning but I could not interact with the desktop. The log I found is pasted below. I have since gone back to Joe's last kernel of Sept 22 ( comment #35 ) and so far so good.
