Just found this same abovementioned /.rpmdb directory on my install. It wasn't there before and hasn't ever been there before this morning. I did not do anything involving a kernel. Although vmware player uses dkms when a new kernel is installed, no new kernel was installed today. When will 4.11.2-2.1 be made available for Trusty?

Maybe it appears because of a lack of environment variables (e.g. $HOME not set) in particular situations. As you can see in the listing, the directory is not used frequently, but I'm not sure if it's save to delete it. Maybe the problem is already solved in the current version of ubuntu (at last the time the files were touched I was running Ubuntu 11.10), but I think it's important to have this bug registered so other users can find it.
