I assume(d) that the OP only mounts those remote home directories to do 
maintenance on them, exchange/edit files, etc.

FWIW, if the goal is mostly to keep certain sets of files synchronised across 
computers, look at the unison file synchronisation utility. It allows you to do 
just that, and is very fast and robust.
