Forgot to mention: This is on KUbuntu 14.04.3 LTS, running very recent rebuilds of KDELibs, KDE-Runtime, KDE-BaseApps and certain others, using the Trusty packaging scripts (cf. ppa:rjvbertin/kde-git). I've been running such builds for over a year now without ill effects, so it shouldn't be causing this new behaviour unless something related to kxkb (kxkbd?) changed in a very recent commit to kdelibs.
