There was a bit of bashing the OP from other posters, some justified (Mint-specific stuff), some unjustified. I have the identical problem as the OP. No panel, no cashews, no plasmoids on the desktop since upgrading from 4.11 to 4.12 one week ago. My distro isn't Mint; I'm running Debian sid/jessie with experimental. Since I run a lot of bleeding-edge versions of a lot of programs, I expect problems like this to happen from time to time and have several other DMs installed just in case. Today I'm using Enlightenment, at least until I can fix KDE. I also have Xfce, Blackbox, Fluxbox and Openbox, just in case some problems cross DMs. Regarding the KDE "no panel, no cashews, no plasmoids" problem, I am downgrading incrementally from 4.12 to 4.11 using the Synaptic package manager, which (IIRC) should be available in Mint, but I haven't used Mint since Lisa and my memory may be foggy there.
