IIUC, at auto start, KnetworkManager did not show up in the System tray, 
yet:

     ps aux | grep knetworkmanager

shows that it is running.

I suggest that you try this: open a konsole and:

     killall knetworkmanager

     knetworkmanager

and see if that fixes the problem.
