The /etc/ttys way has been deprecated.

$ cat /usr/ports/x11/kde4-workspace/files/pkg-message.in

To enable KDE Display Manager (KDM), add kdm4_enable="YES" to
/etc/rc.conf. To get full functionality you also need procfs(5)
mounted.
