I can guess. Amarok 2.3 can't use now embedded library from fresh mysql51 to
init own
internal database by innodb issue.
So, it compiles, but doesn't work? Although some of the fault may be with MySQL devs, this sounds like an Amarok's problem...
So only one way - revert to mysql50, build amarok, run it, configure it (no
matter -
external or internal db), switch back to mysql51 and rebuild amarok. It will
use previously
created database without any problems.

All anger please route ro mysql developers, which broke compatibility:(
Wait, after I built KDE4 (and amarok-kde4), I got mysql-server-5.0.90 installed -- not 5.1... Or are you saying, Amarok builds its own (modified?) version of MySQL?

FWIW, Gentoo seems to require MySQL-5.0 <http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=306509> for Amarok. And there is a fair share of complaints <http://www.mail-archive.com/gentoo-u...@lists.gentoo.org/msg98515.html>.
