I've Google'd around with the words 'kioslave CRASH protocol https' and
saw older threads (~2006) about the same issue; I followed one of the
hints in the message:

 Message-Id: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
 Newsgroups: lucky.freebsd.current
 Subject: Re: KDE & OpenSSL 0.9.8 in -CURRENT

and have just removed the pkg

# pkg_delete -f openssl-0.9.8h_1

and now kopete (it is KDE3's kdenetwork-kopete-0.12.7) connects fine with
MSN and also KDE4's konqueror works fine with HTTPS;
