I still don't know the cause, but I got qt4-gui built after deinstalling all qt[3,4] and kde related ports and installing kdebase3. I'm not sure if installing kdebase3 had any effect. The environment in which the build failed was a fresh and minimal gnome desktop with a handfull of qt/kde ports (installed as dependencies to ktorrent or qt4-gui itself)
