Is Fluendo a gst0.10 or gst-1.0 API level plugin?
Either. http://www.oneplaydirect.com/oneplay/oneplay-codec-pack/ Though the mp3 thing is less precise ("0.10 or higher") http://www.oneplaydirect.com/oneplay/oneplay-mp3-decoder/ Don't use it, esp. don't pay for it - you only pay royalties to the MPEG-LA. Use the gst-ugly plugins (or vlc or mplayer which provide better performance anyway) What VLC would likely require was a) a clear separation of it's plugins b) some sort of believable "can be legally useful" case c) an ABI stable plugin interface d) illegal plugins on some servers in tuvalu, totally neither owned nor sponsored by RedHat ;-) e) catch missing codec cases in a end-user friendly way Afaik gstreamer actually has this "oneclick" system where you try to play an unsupported file and are then instructed to get/purchase some codec for it from fluendo? However, let's be honest here: If we wanted, we could make phonon-vlc the default-and-only solution and put a sticky topic onto forum.kde.org "i cannot playback audio/video" with a nice linklist to rpmfusion etc. (and a legal disclaimer) - the situation on the distros that are subject to the forementioned problems is utter crap (like totally "unfriendly") for their users either way.
