Hi Brock,

There's one simple way to get involved and that's to just start coding :-)  
Pick an area of KDE that you are interested in, whether it's edu or calligra 
or plasma or where-ever, and then contact that group to see what help they 
need. Go into bugs.kde.org and choose some simple bugs to fix and submit 
patches for them, or find some junior jobs to work on.  Once you have some 
experience you'll then be able to get a developers account and be free to work 
where you like.
