Hello everyone,

I am experiencing a very dubious issue with Kwin/KDE, namely: I have had
inconsistent performance when Desktop effects are enabled (Sometimes they are
smooth, when not a lot of apps are running. After the system has been running
for a while and a lot of programs are open, the effects get choppy and rather
annoying). What I have discovered recently though is this: glxinfo tells me
that direct rendering is actually enabled, so X is able to do direct
rendering.

If i go for a kwin --replace though, i get this info output:
http://pastebin.com/3jP186C5

As you can see, it is quite clear that kwin has no direct rendering available.
So now, the question is why? Compiz works perfectly, so it most probably uses
hardware acceleration. Now, I have also had a look in KInfoCenter, at the
openGL info and found out that it doesn't really know a lot about the graphics
adapter either, as visible here: http://img22.imageshack.us/i/kinfocenter.png/

I have not been able to find anything on the web except a russian post in a
kubuntu forum, which, google-translated, gave me some really good giggles, but
they didn't have a solution either.

So the question is, how do I go about debugging the issue?

INFO: Kubuntu 10.10, kde 4.6.1, ATI Mobility Radeon 4650, using ATI
proprietary driver, installed manually. Xorg.0.log is clean.

Thank you.
