I have also hit this but only for the past week or so.
After clicking on open as Administrator, I enter the password, then it hangs
for a long while, and then I got the empty window with the "Unknown error" as
described in this bug report.
Once I got the red banner with "Unknown error" with nothing inside the window,
I can still navigate back say up a directory and then I am in Admin mode inside
dolphin (with the usual red warning banner). But then I also have issues trying
to open a file as root, say a text file with Kate, when after entering the
password it just hangs for a while before allowing me to edit.
Fedora is still on KDE Gears 24.08.0 so maybe this is somewhat solved if using
24.08.1.
