At this point, this issue seems to be resolved. I am running a fresh install of
Debian GNU/Linux 12 (bookworm) x86_64 on possibly a different laptop ( I am not
sure which machine I discovered the problem on) and kpat and other programs are
all working properly from the Task Manager. I also just checked that I am
running Wayland before this reply.
