The icon appears to work fine in most cases (e.g. when connecting to my mobile phone hotspot), but there are a couple of public hotspots in the place I am now where it does not update... So, definitely it seems to depend on something on the specific hotspot. I guess that the applet may "look" at something to see if the connection is established and cannot find it, so it does not update the icon.
