I'm wrong about getpid, there's a whole section in the man page about how it
did now doesn't. I'm too old!

Yes.
There's definitely lots of scope to optimise. Either a cache, or turning this
logic on it's head. We could also explore throwing it in the bin now we have
better paths for the goal this set out to achieve.
