There has been a lot of work in this area since the last update on this bug
report, most of these things should be fixed by now, so I'll mark this as
resolved.
There's bug 459136 to track the remaining issue with virtual keyboards
specifically; if you find any other corner cases where KWin doesn't restore
window sizes properly, please make separate bug reports for the specific
issues.
