Bug ID: 486399 Summary: kwin_wayland crashing will crash many native Wayland apps (which seems to be unintended?) Classification: Plasma Product: kwin Version: 6.0.3 Platform: Other OS: Linux Status: REPORTED Severity: normal Priority: NOR Component: wayland-generic Assignee: kwin-bugs-n...@kde.org Reporter: e...@horse64.org Target Milestone: --- SUMMARY It seems like kwin_wayland crashing will crash many native Wayland apps. While it's miraculous anything survives at all, I'm from GNOME land originally where just everything is killed including the session login, I'm filing this because it feels like it was probably intended for no apps to crash. Yet many Wayland-native apps, like Firefox in "Windowing: wayland" mode, kate, nheko reborn (chat client) apparently die, or did for me. Some like kwrite and dolphin, which I assume are also both wayland native, survived however. STEPS TO REPRODUCE 1. Use computer until kwin_wayland crashes and confirm in dmesg that's what crashed. The screen will most likely briefly be black while things are reset. 2. Observe that many wayland apps, but not all of them, will have terminated as well. If firefox was running in wayland mode with one of the official mozilla releases, as in not the distribution-packaged release, then you should also see the mozilla crash reporter pop up. OBSERVED RESULT Some Wayland apps don't make it. EXPECTED RESULT All Wayland apps, or at least the ones that aren't like, a graphically intense game that I guess might handle this type of interruption less well, are probably meant to survive? I mean I don't know, but since some actually make it I'm guessing there's meant to be a mechanism that allows them to but doesn't quite work.
