I recently switched to an AMD GPU (still using X11), so I don't think it's NVIDIA specific, although strangely, I know in the original report I mentioned it happened with multiple applications, I assume the other applications breaking is a side effect of IntelliJ (WebStorm), since I just had it re-occur while using WebStorm which I haven't used in a while and it hasn't happened since I last used it. Toggling the compositor does actually fix it, not sure why I didn't think to try that a few months ago. I've attached the xwininfo output, and a screenshot to the original issue.
