sorry for the confusion:
it's just a single bug:
in wayland using chrome or firefox, Ctrl-O file open dialog with xdg-portal is
broken {usability wise}
The save-as dialog instead works perfectly
The part with GTK_USE_PORTAL=0 was just additional info
