VLC is only a recommended package. Elisa can also use Qt Multimedia as its
backend. I'm pretty sure openSUSE doesn't build Elisa with VLC (libvlc is not
in the required or recommended list) and it works just fine in my experience
(maybe there are issues I haven't noticed).
That said, it seems like someone has already put in some work towards using an
MPV backend. You may be interested in giving it a try or following its
progress:
