SUMMARY
Suppose you start searching for something while browsing a category. In that
case, you might not find what you're looking for because you are searching
inside a specific category, not globally. The user has to remember to first
switch to "All Applications" or "Home" to search between all applications, and
that's easy to forget and makes searching cumbersome. Discover could make it
more obvious you're searching inside a specific category and also show some
messages telling the user to switch to global search in a few cases.
Unfortunately, the "Search in ..." text inside the search bar is not enough
since it's not attention-grabbing and is immediately replaced when the user
types something.
I have some ideas to improve the situation:
- In the header, after searching, say "Searching in {Category}: {Search term} -
{# items}" instead of just "Search: {Search term} - {# items}"
- If nothing is found while searching inside of a category, offer a button to
search globally in addition to the current message to search on the web.
- If while searching inside a category something is found, still offer a button
called "Search in all categories" at the end of the page, or maybe as an inline
informational message at the top + a description akin to "You are searching in
{category} and might not see all results. [Search in all categories]"
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Click on the Games category
2. Search for Firefox
OBSERVED RESULT
Discover tells the user to search online and shows no more results, even if the
application they're looking for is available in another category.
EXPECTED RESULT
Discover should make it more obvious the user is searching in a specific
category and offer a button to switch to the global search.
