It works the way you're seeing it work. :)
If it can center the contents between panel spacers, it will. If it can't, it
tries its best while preserving some space (which is what you wanted, or else
you wouldn't have added spacers).
This is scheduled to become a bit more flexible in Plasma 5.27, but for the
most part, what you see is how it's intended and expected to work.
