Running KMail 5.1.3, I also experienced this bug.
The only workaround I found is to manually edit the font settings in kmailrc:
UnreadMessageFont=Monospace,10,-1,5,75,0,0,0,0,0 <- this is bold
UnreadMessageFont=Monospace,10,-1,5,50,0,0,0,0,0 <- this is not
the value 75 defines the bold font.
Please, fix this.
