I tried what you suggested and turned on the "Show Paint" effect. The only
difference between wayland an xorg seems that on wayland the screen also
flickers when just moving the cursor. But the screen does not flicker
constantly, so there is nothing causing constant repaints. 
I also switched to Crocus driver by setting export
MESA_LOADER_DRIVER_OVERRIDE=crocus in ~/.profile but it does not help.
The same issue exists in Opensuse Leap 15.4.
