For the sake of the experiment I created a new test user and with all the defaults it gets the progress bars were horizontal. Probably there is some old setting buried somewhere that is causing this. Argh!!! I hate the idea of nuking my kde config directory :( Please feel free to close the issue (as being not KTorrent related). Happy to get recommendations where to open it if anyone knows.
