Mm... following your comment, I researched more in the options.
I activated Settings -> Configure Digikam -> Image Editor -> Versioning ->
Always show original images and I got the original groups back.

Thanks a lot for the support.

I hope our conversation helps the OP too as his "problem" seems to be quite
similar to mine, just with groups not filename-based, but manually-created
ones.
