If you alt+tab fast enough, the switcher isn't displayed and will instead instantly take you to the previously-active app. If you want to switch to a different app by keeping the alt key held down to make the switcher visually appear, then you need to look at it, in which case presumably you can wait 150 ms for the animation to play.
