ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
ran these commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports
sudo apt upgrade
now the computer is stuck right after logging in to plasma.
A circular icon is turning for a while, then stopping and staying this way
indefinitely.
