I'm a firm believer in the idea good design can keep UX and UI from being in
conflict, but when this is unavoidable, UX has to win.
In this case I think we can have both, with a design like this:

(paste it into a text editor, because the new design mangles text that looks
better in a monospaced font, which is another issue. :) )
