I am using Kate from master, and it works identical as in KDE 4.14.10 version.
Switching between the "incremental search bar" and the "power search and
replace bar" keeps the current find string, both when using the keyboard
shortcuts (Ctrl+F, Ctrl+R), as well as when clicking the leftmost toolbutton to
switch between the modes.
The new toolbutton is no longer a green arrow, but it is neither big (it has
the same size as the other toolbuttons), nor ugly (it is just a "configure"
icon). I fail to see how it is unworkable. If you like green arrows, use the
old Kate version, or change the icon.
