In fact I have several USB controllers that only work properly when I power the drive that's attached to USB with a ATX power supply, a lot depends on the drive power ratings. If I was you I'd throw that particular USB controller in the bin and buy a decent quality USB controller with lots of good reviews. Good luck, now you are using SATA, I'm sure everything will be fine !
