The only ones which trigger it are "mä" and "är", unlike other combinations I tested such as "mõ" or "nä". So I reduced screen resolution from 1600x900 to 1368x768. Now searching for "mä" or "är" results in exactly 6 items in 3 rows, which fills up roughly about the height of the area. Like this everything works just fine. And looks like your theory was right. I had changed the height of the main panel on top. I increased the height for 2 pixels more and this way the bug does not expose itself.
