It was pretty fiddly but all I was doing was highlighting items and hitting ctrl-s (sometimes the ctrl-s in quick succession). I realise this isn't that helpful, as the document structure must be important. Part of the reason I thought autosave is useful, is that PDF is a complex legacy format and all sorts of interactions must be possible.
