The conclusion was more along the lines of "in the absence of a saved preference, ask the user and write out the result in mimeapps.list" -- and also some improvements to the defaults by separating native mimetypes from other supported mimetypes. This hasn't resulted in a spec though, partly due to inaction on my side.
